Trekking experts recommend acclimatizing in Chhukung before doing the Kongma La pass. However, rest means not staying ideal. The view of Chhukung and further up the valley on the moraines towards Island peak (6189 m) is tremendous.

We grasp this opportunity to climb the Chhukung Ri or climb the base camp of Island peak. Overnight in Chhukung full board provided.

This morning we start at the first light from Chhukung as we have to conquest the highest pass of the trip today. We carry plenty of water and some snacks and a packed lunch as there are no tea shops on the way.

We will really enjoy the remoteness of the area and absolute nature!! we can select to go via any of the possible trails-either taking a climb over the hill northwest of Chhukung over the moraine of the Nuptse Glaciers or we might walk back down the valley of Bibra and follow a high trail above the Niyan Khola.

Ascending along the east side of Niyang Khola Valley, we turn west and walk through the sloppy stony trial. We enter a wide basin dotted with small frozen lakes. The trail rises over loose After about five hours we leave Chhukung. Upon reaching the top, we encounter with cairn wrapped in prayer flags, marks of the pass.

Ahead on the trail, we see the crest of the north ridge of Everest along with Mt.pomari, Mahalangur, Lingtem, Khumbutse, Nuptse, etc. A small ascent would take us to Thangma Riju from where we perceive a 360-degree vista of snowy mountains.

Climbing steeply up to the top through the torrent of Changri glacier, we watch our first glimpse of Kalapather, a gray-green knoll beneath Mt. Pumori. As we reach Gorekshep, we will be surrounded by snow-capped mountains looming all around us including the top of the world Mount Everest.

After a brief lunch and rest, we take the trail to Everest base camp through the once-past Gorekshap Lake. Continuing straight ahead, we come through the Indian Army mountaineer memorials. As we reach Everest base camp we cannot stop ourselves from appreciating the Everest climbers who take hazardous routes through the Khumbu icefall in the spring.

We can see mountaineers' tents stand out in bright colors against all the dull gray surrounding around. Nuptse, Khunbuste, and Pomari are the mountains we can view from the base camp Actually Everest cannot be seen from the base camp properly, for that, we need to wait until the next day morning to up the Kalapatthar hill or those who are interested to go Kalapatthar in the same day can go with our guide or Sherpa. When climbing the Kalapatther we can pause to catch our breath at several places from where we can have an outstanding viewpoint to snap pictures of the highest mountain.

After two hours of walking, we will be in the best viewpoint of the world called Kalapatther where we scramble to climb the rocky outcrop near to the summit marked by cams and prayer flags. As we reach the top, we will sit on the Kalapather rocks and our eyes taking in the unbelievable Himalayan panorama, wandering from one mighty massif to another.

As we can take a picture of how much we can take and also take the inner view with our minds and eye to last lifetime. Today with great Mountain View we will reach in Dzongla and stay overnight and full board provided.

Today is one of the tough days of the trip. We will walk with the packed lunch and walk for around 9 hours. We will start in the early morning, today paths descend to a basin across which meanders a murmuring stream crusted with ice at places.

In about an hour, we will reach the top of the basin. As we gain high the view back gets increasingly more activating. The final climb to Chola can be a little tricky. Upon reaching the top, we see prayer flags, strung across cairns, flapping in the strong wind.

Essential Information

Safe Drinking water on Everest High pass trek

Safe drinking mineral water is available in each and every tea house, lodge, and lunch stop. The mineral water is made in the Everest region which avoids taking from Kathmandu city. While you go to higher elevations safe drinking water may not be available everywhere. At high elevations, the water gets frozen and hard to drink unless you mix it with hot or other normal water.

Drinking frozen water will make you sick too. It was always better to have hot water in your bottle which makes you warm as well as saves the environment from plastic bottles. Water Purification tablets, as well as pills, are ways to have safe drinking water.

You can fill water from the kitchen with the help of a guide and get safe drinking water after using the medicine on it. This is very effective on high passes because you don’t have to carry many water bottles.

Remember these things while doing Everest high pass trek.

There are stone steps up and down which are very uneven and due to some long descents, your leg may feel tired. We recommend using walking poles to feel safer. To avoid such risks and Problems trekkers need to walk slowly and drink lots of fluid. In case there is some health problems share them with friends or guide so that they can solve the situations. We need to be very careful on crossing the three passes and crossing glaciers and lakes.

Gokyo RI viewpoint during Everest high pass trek

The viewpoint is on an elevation of 5360 meters. Viewpoint is just above Gokyo valley. That viewpoint takes 5 hours altogether. It is also the viewpoint for sunrise as well as a sunset. We can see beautiful Everest Himalayan ranges including Everest. The new mountain we can see is Makalu. The viewpoint also provides a wonderful view of Cho Oyu and some mountains of Tibet. The lake and valley view below is somethings that attract many people to Gokyo RI. Ngozumba glacier is also possible to see from top to bottom.

Renjo la pass top viewpoint during Everest high pass trek

This is another viewpoint that is very popular for its view. We can see of Everest Himalayan ranges as well as Makalu. The view of Tangi Ragi Tau, Rollalking range as well as Gyachung Kang. Most of this viewpoint is for three pass trekkers as well as Renjo la pass trekkers. Now for a better view, many people who stay Gokyo valley do this as day trip instead of Gokyo RI. The elevation is the same as Gokyo RI which is 5360 meters. We will have this viewpoint while crossing Renjo la pass.

Answer: Yes alcohol is possible to buy Everest 3 high pass trekking. On lower elevations, there will be bars and pubs where you can enjoy music as well as drinks. On higher parts also lodges sell drinks but we recommend not to drink alcohol unless you cross all pass. You can drink in Namche and Lukla village on the way back. Alcohol drinking may get you altitude sickness. Beware of drinking in high elevations.

Answer: The three high pass trekking is a long journey. You need to be well prepared mentally as well as physically for this adventure. If you got sick on the trek then we will rest some days and continue if you are OK to continue. We may not have enough time for all 3 passes but we will give a try. Our guide or trek leader will check the conditions and decide whether to trek continue or turn back. In some case the sickness is very dangerous on that case you have to evacuate back to lower elevations.

Answer: The number of guides depends on the number of group size. For more than 6 trekkers we will provide a guide and assistant guide. If the group is 10 to 15 then there will be 1 guide with 3 assistant guides. The number of porter for the trek is half of the trekkers. We provide 1 porter for two trekkers.

Magic Himalaya Treks were highly recommended to us by our friends Robbie and Sarah here in New Zealand. In April 2018 we visited Nepal to do the 3 High Passes Trek to Everest Base Camp in the Khumbu Valley. Nabin met us at Tribhuvan Airport in Kathmandu and organized all the accommodation, porters, and internal flights. He knows all the best places to stay - hotels in Kathmandu and teahouses in the Khumbu Valley. Nabin is very safety conscious and makes regular health checks Read More ...
